Vegetables nutrition – know your vegetable juice
This is the third vegetables nutrition article I’m posting about vegetables juice, as this subject is an important one. As i have explained in the two prior articles, drinking juice regularly can make you or brake you. It all depends on how you do it. We said that it can save us a great deal of time, help us get a portion of the vegetables we usually don’t eat, support our nutrient levels when we can’t chew or swallow hard food, and help us introduce vegetables gradually and safely to a stomach that is not used to digesting vegetables.
We have also touched some of the bad sides of drinking juice, which are the taste factor, the fact we need to make it and drink it right away, and the common mistake we make when we take fruit juice to be as healthy as vegetables juice. As much as i like juices, it is time to expand our knowledge on some more of the bad sides of it all.
Vegetables nutrition and Juice is FOOD not beverage!
Our modern way of living is based on availability of food. We have plany of food to go around, from all parts of the world, and all we have to do is reach out and grab it. This has led us to do great things, but also to take on some bad habits. One of them is overeating. Our bad consumption habits are taking our body and health to places they shouldn’t be in, and we later on pay the price by physical pain, disease, and even paying the doctors.
Drinking unproportional portions of vegetables juice is the same story as overeating. The thing is, it is much easier to overeat when we drink our meal then when we have to chew it. Chewing takes time, and effort. It also connects to a part of our brains that is responsible for our feeling of hunger and satiation. That point in the brain gives a command, and the stomach and intestine change their attitude, and slowly but surely the mind follows and hopefully our hands stop reaching out for more.
When drinking juice, this process is in danger, as we can consume many times the quantity of food in the same time it would have taken us to chew and swallow very little. Juice is food, not beverage
Vegetables nutrition and our bad habits
Another risk we have by drinking vegetables juice irresponsibly is saliva mixture. I have discussed the right way of eating before on this vegetables nutrition page, but i don’t think i have covered this specific subject, and it is more important here then anywhere. While chewing our food, not only do we break it a part to small pieces, we also mix it with our saliva. This process ensures good digestion by introducing the enzymes we carry in our saliva. The fact is, digestion begins in the mouth – in the chewing process.
Most of us are used to under-chew. We chew our food too fast and without enough attention. As a result, our digestion is not peaking, and many nutritional values are lost as the bolus (the chewed food) reaches the stomach without the sufficient enzymes to break it. It is even more common with juice. When we drink, we usually do it in golps, while swallowing directly. Who ever heard of chewing fluids??
I have! Chewing is not exactly what we need to do, but mixing the juice in our mouths, playing around with our tong and cheeks, in order to get a good amount of saliva mixture. This process is usually so different then the way most of us are used to drinking, that i assure you once you do it a couple of times with attention, every time you will put liquid into your mouth it will ring a bell in your head. This is one of the secrets of good digestion, and also the main “secret” of french-health. They do not swallow their wine before mixing it thoroughly in their mouth, and so they absorb all the nutrients in it, especially the anti-oxidants that are best absorbed in the mouth itself.
So drink responsibly, and read the next vegetables nutrition post for more vegetables juice facts.
