vegetables nutrition:avoiding iron absorption prohibitors
After discussing the basics of needs, vegetables, and nutrition facts of Iron, we are almost ready for another subject – nutritional fibers! why almost? because i forgot one little thing, that is pretty important. we are all good and well eating our iron rich foods, and iron absorption nutrients such as vitamin C, but there is another portion of the cake – prohibitors.
there are some elements in our diet that might stop us from receiving the iron we need. i say might, because there is an ongoing research on the subject, and some are in question. the truth is that we cannot know 100% because each stomach is a little different and the elements that effect the digestions are uncountable really. but we could and must do the best we can at any given time. don’t we? and so best is to take the knowledge available, and harness it to our benefit.
How can we eat a balanced vegetables nutrition based diet for iron absorption? we already know most of the facts, from past posts – and now – the “do not do” list. the items on the following list should be avoided while, and in the range of 2 hours prior and following the eating a meal full of iron, if that is the element we are trying to give our body. in other words – to absorb iron we avoid mixing it with these items :
- soy products such as Soy milk and tofu
- spinach (yes, seriously
) - red wine
- beet greens
- sweet potato
- coffee and tea (or any soft drink that has caffeine in it!)
- whole grains
- dietary fibers
as there is a debate going on about the actual effects these foods have on our digestive system, when it comes to iron, we are all better off just not consuming them prior and while having an iron rich meal, nor right after it, so to give our body a better starting point for getting the most out of the meal. some other foods, such as legumes, might also do the same, but are pretty much harmless when cooked, and are only eaten cooked, so we needn’t worry much about it. there are other inhibitors, but i think these are the main characters of the story, but please feel free to enlighten us with further information.
